Sustainable Development

"Sustainable development is not cost, but future competitiveness" - ClearCat ® to redefine green healthcare with technology.

In the sustainable development section, we pay special attention to sustainability, climate action, and social responsibility, especially in the field of ophthalmic medical apparatus. Through the following innovative strategies and action plans, we hope to achieve real environmental and social impact.

SDG3

Good Health and Well-being

Ensuring access to safe and effective eye care is at the core of our mission. By developing non-surgical, sustained-release cataract treatment, we aim to provide an accessible and convenient alternative to traditional surgery, particularly for patients in low-resource settings. Our engineered bacteria-based lens therapy reduces the risks associated with invasive procedures while improving long-term treatment adherence.

To further promote public health, we will collaborate with local healthcare providers and NGOs to establish vision screening programs in underserved areas, ensuring early detection and intervention for cataract patients. Additionally, we are committed to maintaining high biosafety standards to minimize environmental and health risks. Through these efforts, we strive to bridge the healthcare gap, making advanced eye care both affordable and sustainable.

SDG12

Responsible Consumption and Production

To promote resource recycling and responsible production methods, we will cooperate with local recycling companies in Hangzhou (such as Zhejiang Qiang (Hangzhou) Renewable Resources Recycling Co., Ltd. ) to establish a recycling network for contact lens materials. Through this closed-loop production system, we will achieve chemical depolymerization and regeneration of hydrogen materials, reducing resource waste. At the same time, we also plan to cooperate with or build, if the finance permits, a zero-waste factory, hoping to achieve 100% reuse of production waste, such as using scraps for 3D printing medical models, further reducing resource waste in the production process.

LCA and Technological Innovation

We use hydrogel materials as the basis for product design and material selection, selecting polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and hyaluronic acid composite hydrogels to ensure that the materials are degradable in the natural environment. Through optimization in the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) stage, we may further investigate the possibility of using non-petroleum-based PVA (such as corn starch-derived materials) to reduce dependence on fossil energy. At the same time, we could cooperate with Hangzhou Garbage Treatment Center to improve the process and accelerate the decomposition of hydrogel waste.

We adopt a dual safety design for the biosafety of engineering bacteria. Firstly, physical encapsulation is achieved through a hydrogel layer. Secondly, the Biosafety reporting module and pathogenicity risk of engineering bacteria are theoretically verified. What's more, in case any leakage would cause unwanted harm to our environment, we designed the Auxotrophic Bacterial System to make that leaking bacteria won't become an environmental threat.

During the LCA stage, a third-party organization (Attachment 1) could be commissioned to conduct a full life cycle biosafety evaluation to ensure that the product does not bring latent risks to the environment and ecosystem.

Long-term Strategy and Social Impact

  1. Industry Standard Development: Our goal is to push forward the development of the National Standard for degradable ophthalmic medical apparatus (Ophthalmic Biodegradable Medical Devices) and promote the transformation of the entire industry towards sustainability.
  2. Consumer Education: We plan to launch a carbon labeling program, which will label specific carbon emission information on product packaging (such as "carbon emission per lens: 5g CO2 e"). This initiative will help consumers understand and choose more environmentally friendly products, thereby guiding the trend of green consumption.

Through these strategies, we not only promote sustainable development in innovation and technology, but also promote the concept of responsible consumption and green production globally, committed to creating a better and sustainable future.
